Remodeling of the existing skate park in Sonsbeck, Germany

In the township of Sonsbeck nearby the Niederrhein, the skate park in the playground and sports field on Parkstraße is to be renewed as part of a LEADER project. LEADER was launched by the EU as a support program for sustainable rural development. In this program, there is something special that all citizens of the region can help to shape the development process. The reason for this is the unsatisfactory leisure offer for children and young people in the region. In the Eastern part of the SV Sonsbeck is already a skate park, which is outdated and heavily worn. The new skate park will be located on the area of the existing skate park. This should be harmoniously integrated into the surrounding landscape and maintain a modern design. In addition to the SV Gerolzhofen, there is also the sports park Willy-Lemkens. This creates a large area with many different sports facilities.

A barrier-free design should address different user groups. Through two participation workshops children and adolescents, who were already involved in the development of the project idea, are invited to participate. The children and adolescents form the primary target group of the project, and only by participating can the project be designed according to needs.

Skatepool Wilnsdorf, Germany

Skatepool Wilnsdorf, Germany

In connection with the rearrangement of the new bike park in Wilnsdorf, we planned a 200m2 concrete pool. We designed it for an association called Förderverein Skateranlage Wilnsdorf e.V. Since over 10 years the association is busy with the structural maintenance, after a long time they got the financial support to start with the rearrangement.

The start of the new concrete pool was on the 21.08.2017. A small part of the concrete pool was build by the association, but the bigger part was made by a professional company. The design was made in cooperation by Dietsches O.M.S.A. One important characteristic of the concrete pool is the waterfall, which has a height difference from 1,7m to 2,3m. Next to the waterfall, we build a Hip to skip between the levels. Across from the Hip the skaters have the possibility to do creative lines.

The Opening was on the 01.10.2017 !

Skateparks as vehicles of development cooperation

Skateparks are very attractive vehicles for development cooperation for a variety of reasons. They promote social and integrative skills, as well as coordination and sensory-motor skills. Unlike classical club sports, the emphasis here is on self-organisation and group cohesion. They therefore represent a very good means of selfhelp: instead of competitiveness, cooperation is encouraged and is lastingly anchored in society.

Spaces for movement – when standards and user preferences collide

The magazine for landscaping architecture „Anthos” has put out an article by us in its May 2017 issue with the title “When standards and user preferences collide”. In it we explore how norms and other regulations for  skate- and bike parks can be matched with the demands and expectations of its future users.

BMX and skateboarding are well-established forms of sport; subsequently, the demand for high quality roll-sport-facilities is on the rise

Design and construction of these projects requires a lot of specific technical knowledge and experience. Therefore, execution through skilled planners and specialized construction companies is advised.

Because of the many possibilities concerning layout, choice of materials and size of both park and obstacles it is indispensable to include all potential users in the design process through various workshops.

Skatepark Duelmen, Germany

Skatepark Duelmen, Germany

The 2,000 m² big skatepark is devided in three areas.

On the highest level is a pool with vert from there you get over banks and transition to the next level. A tree emphasizes the street character. Banks and a wallride gives you a lot of opportunities to improve your riding.
After some banks, ledges and rails you get down on the lowest level. Instead of concrete, you find a flagging without a chamber-bevel and with a small gap for better riding conditions. A vulcano, ten stairs, rails, banks and curbs gives you everything you need!
